The whole idea behind The Better Period is that instead of dreading our period every month and suffering through the discomfort and inconvenience, we could actually make it better.
Define ‘Better’
The definition of better I feel best aligns with The Better Period is: to improve something, making it more satisfactory, suitable, pleasant, effective, or of higher quality.
When I first started The Better Period it was off the back of my own discovery of menstrual cups and later period-proof underwear. It was my opinion, from my experience using them, that these reusable period products were a much better way to manage periods and I wanted to share that with the world by building this online community.
More Than Just Better Period Products
Along the way The Better Period became so much more for me than just the period products. And I have greatly expanded my definition of what a better period really is. I still love talking about reusable period products and helping others discover them too but I also love learning so much about my menstrual cycle as a whole, what is actually happening in my body every single month as part of this cycle, what it is showing about my overall health and how I can make my cycle work for me.
Define ‘Period’
I was really thoughtful in choosing how to define the word ‘period’ in relation to The Better Period. The definition needed to perfectly capture my own expanded definition of period. I settled on the following definition:
“the bleed phase of the menstrual cycle, the finale in a series of hormonal events, of which ovulation is the main event”
I adapted this definition from the book ‘Period Repair Manual’ by Lara Briden. As Lara so perfectly puts it in her book “A real period is a finale in a series of hormonal events which includes ovulation and the making of progesterone.” I adapted the definition further from the title of a recent blog post from Lara called ‘Ovulation is the main event of the menstrual cycle.’
It’s important to realise that your period is not just the annoying few days you bleed every month. It is one part of our whole menstrual cycle.
I hope this helps you to understand a bit more about what The Better Period is and what you can expect as you continue to be a part of this community and journey with me.
